Ruger 5 7 - The all-new Ruger-57 pistol is a very special gun that uses 5.7×28mm ammunition. Developed by FN in the 1980s, the 5.7x28mm (5.7) pistol cartridge is a small-caliber, high-velocity pistol cartridge based on the 5.56x45mm SS109 NATO round. Ammo is fast, delivering about 2,000 feet per second leaving the 5-inch barrel. Here in the US, Ruger released the Model 57 in late December 2019, which uses a 5.7x28mm cartridge. We were lucky enough to receive one of the first Ruger-57 pistols to review and share.
Without a doubt, the 5.7x28mm cartridge is an excellent cartridge that offers several advantages. The 5.7 round case and bullets are reduced in size, giving them better performance than 9x19mm. The round is a long, slim design with a bottleneck case and pointed bullets, as shown in the photo above. It is almost 4 times longer than its diameter. This compares to a standard 9mm round which is about 1.5 times as long as it is wide. The 5.7x28mm bullet has a center of mass more to the rear of the bullet than other bullets. So when a 5.7 bullet hits its target, the bullet tends to roll forward or sway from side to side, creating a much larger wound hole. This transfers the energy of the bullet to the target more effectively, reducing the possibility of over-penetrating targets behind the target. So, a bigger wound cavity; transmit more energy; little overpenetration; more extensions. Some say the 5.7mm has only 1/3 the recoil of the 5.6mm NATO and 2/3 the recoil of the 9x19mm. The cartridge pressure level is low enough that the pistol is operated and helps reduce felt recoil. I had to shoot it myself to see what the felt recoil was like and compare it to the excellent FN 5.7 pistol reviewed here in December 2016.

5.7 There is a difference of opinion about cartridges and pistols, and it depends on how you define and measure "performance" etc. As some claim, the 5.7 pistol could defeat ballistic armor. The second generation 5.7 cartridge was developed for the police and civilian markets. "LF" (lead-free SS195LF) ammunition can be used for training and law enforcement, while sporting ammunition SS197SR is for civilian use because armor-piercing ammunition is banned in the United States. The SS195LF is a lead-free hollow point (HP) round with a completely lead-free primer and bullet. It can also be used on indoor ranges or where potential lead contamination is a concern. (I prefer a foreign range.)

Some say the cost of 5.7x28mm ammo is a big waste. consider this Civilian SS197SR ammo costs about $20. Per 50 passes, SS195LF HP rounds are about $25 per 50 passes. So ammo now looks almost the same as .45 ACP (eg Speer Gold Dot 230 grain HP $28 for 50 rnds) and other caliber ammo (eg Federal Premium .40 S&W 155 grain HP $28 for 50 rnds). Personal wallet preferences.
5.7 is currently in service with the armed forces and police forces of more than 40 countries, including Canada, France, Spain, Greece, India, Poland, and the United States, including the United States Secret Service, some Navy SEAL units, and the Federal Protection Agency. The Ruger Double Action 5.7's internal hammer isn't quite the SAO striker some claim, but it always hunts when there's a round in the chamber. There is no decoker. So even though I prefer the 9mm, I had to try the 5.7 myself to see if this unique gun and caliber would work for me. You can compare this review with my analysis, comparison and ranking of handguns from the second printing of my book "Concealed Carry & Handgun Essentials".
Here are the specifications and features of the Ruger-57 pistol. Next we present the 10 criteria we use to evaluate all firearms. Finally, I present my analysis and how I specifically rated the gun for each of the 10 criteria that I recommend or do not recommend. As always, set your own criteria and priorities, do your own research and view your data, information and more to make a very personal selection process.
Here are 10 criteria and factors we use to evaluate handguns, so we'll use them for the Ruger-57. In addition to my criteria, there are other subjective features that may appeal to some people, such as specific style, magazine release location, behavior, caliber, shape, number of magazines included, type of scope/mod, bore, rails, grips. . Additional items included such as corners, unworn or worn, pistols and bags, customer service and more. So I combined this to my last guitar criterion. I have to admit that all gun selection decisions involve trade-offs, but I really want all of my criteria to be met. For a possible total score of 100, we assigned a possible total score of 10 for each of the 10 criteria. You can add or subtract your own additional criteria and preferences.

I wanted to shoot this pistol and purchased the AE5728A which is Federal American Eagle 5.7x28mm 40 round ammo. Ammunition was readily available and you could shop for the best ammo prices. 5.7 ammo is provided by FN Herstal, Federal and Speer. I reviewed this stock very quickly and needed more shots to properly test and rate it. Thanks to Ruger for donating more ammo. I had a lot of fun shooting this gun and was amazed at its accuracy, lack of muzzle rise and very soft recoil for a lighter gun. I enjoyed shooting about 400 rounds and could not put this great pistol down. I usually shoot 500 rounds over a few days to decide which guns to use and how best to use them. Below is a rating of each of the 10 criteria for the Ruger-57 for home defense and long range shooting. We also considered whether this lightweight pistol with a 4.9-inch barrel and 5.6-inch height could be a portable gun. For me, it wasn't too heavy, too big or cumbersome to conceal and carry. I know some people wear it. I wanted to check the speed of the gun and thoroughly check it for malfunctions, hang-ups, accuracy and reliability. Thanks to Ruger for providing Federal American Eagle and FNH ammunition for pistol testing and evaluation.
This Ruger-57 pistol has worked great. There were no malfunctions or interruptions, and I liked the 20-round capacity magazine. It digested various types of ammunition without problems. I was amazed at the very low felt recoil and almost no muzzle rise. I can honestly say the recoil is much less than my 9mm and about as good as my .22 magazine. When I walked the chute, it was buttery and smooth to handle, and inserting and releasing the mag from the mag was so easy. And the magazine fell out of the magazine quickly and easily. It turned out very well. Despite being a preloaded double action, I was impressed with the trigger press, which was short, smooth, light and sharp, just like my single action pistol. I love the ergonomics and lines of this gun. Although it is polymer, it feels solid in the hand and is very light. It was very comfortable in the hand and the moderately aggressive grip texture was perfect for me. The grip is quite thin, but longer and noticeably wider to hold 20 rounds in the magazine. The grip fit perfectly and was comfortable in my medium sized hand. Again, I want to highlight the nice smooth recoil and very low recoil of this gun when muzzled. Great features and performance that increase accuracy. Below we will get and present specific ideas for each criterion after range testing.

Accuracy was very satisfactory at various distances, especially from 10 to 25 yards, but I took the shots to make my own decisions based on my ability, skill and budget.
Ruger 57 5.7x28mm
The Ruger-57's accuracy was excellent at ranges from 5 to 25 yards. This old, old kosher was thrilled, but the gun did most of the work. Out of the box, I didn't have to adjust the rear sight for elevation or windage. After no fine tuning, my hits were very good. 4.75#
