Ruger 5.7 Bullet - The new Ruger-57 pistol is a very special weapon that uses 5.7×28mm ammunition. The 5.7x28mm (5.7) pistol cartridge, developed by FN in the 1980s, is a small-caliber, high-velocity pistol cartridge based on the 5.56x45mm NATO SS109 cartridge. Ammunition is fast, delivering about 2,000 feet per second exiting the 5-inch barrel. Here in the US, Ruger just introduced their Model 57 in late December 2019, which uses the 5.7x28mm cartridge. I was fortunate enough to be offered one of the first "unpress" Ruger-57 pistols to review and share with you.

Without a doubt, the 5.7x28mm cartridge is a great cartridge with some advantages. The 5.7 round case and bullet dimensions have been reduced to create a 9x19mm for increased performance. The round has a long, thin design with a bottle neck body and pointed bullet as you can see in the photo above. It is almost 4 times longer than its diameter. Compared to a standard 9mm round that is about 1.5 times longer than it is wide. The center of mass of the 5.7x28 mm projectile is further from the bullet than the others. So when the 5.7 bullet hits the target, the bullet tends to drop or lean forward and turn side to side, making the wound cavity much larger. This helps to transfer energy from the bullet to the target more efficiently, reducing the likelihood of it penetrating behind the target. So, the cavity of the biggest wound; Greater energy transfer; Less over penetration; More expansion. Many claim that the recoil of the 5.7mm is only one-third that of the 5.6mm NATO and two-thirds the recoil of the 9x19mm. The pressure level of the cartridge is low enough to operate the gun with recoil and helps reduce felt recoil. I had to shoot it for myself to see how the recoil felt and compare it to the fine FN 5.7 pistol I reviewed HERE in December 2016.

Opinions vary on 5.7 cartridges and pistols and it depends on how you define and measure "performance" etc. Although criticized by gun control groups, the ATF investigation found no ammunition for sale on the civilian market. The 5.7 pistol was capable of defeating ballistic armor as some claimed. The second generation 5.7 cartridge was developed for the law enforcement and civilian markets. The "LF" cartridges (lead-free SS195LF) can be used for training and law enforcement, while the SS197SR sporting cartridges are for civilian use, as armor-piercing ammunition is banned in the US. ) round with a completely lead-free primer and projectile. It's even designed for use in indoor kitchens or where potential lead contamination is a problem. (I prefer outdoor fields.)

Some say the cost of 5.7x28mm ammo is a big loss. Think about it. Civil grade SS197SR shafts cost about $20. for 50 rounds, while SS195LF HP rounds cost around $25 per 50 rounds. So the ammo currently seems comparable to .45 ACP (eg Speer Gold Dot 230 grain HP for $28 50 rnd) and other caliber cartridges (eg Federal Premium .40 S&W 155 grain HP for $28 50 rnd). Personal portfolio preference.

The 5.7 is now in service with military and police forces in more than 40 countries, including Canada, France, Spain, Greece, India, Poland, and the United States, including the United States Secret Service, some Navy SEAL units, and federal services. Defense service. The Ruger Double Action 5.7 internal hammer is NOT a SAO striker as some claim, but it is always cocked with a round in the chamber. There is no decoker. So I had to try the 5.7 myself to see if this unique pistol and caliber would work for me, even though I prefer the 9mm. You can compare this review to my gun analysis, comparisons and rankings in the second edition of my book Concealed Carry & Handgun Essentials.

First, following are the specifications and features of the Ruger-57 pistol. Then I'll give you my 10 criteria that I use to rate all guns. Finally, I'll present my analysis and how I specifically rated the gun based on each of my 10 criteria for recommending it or not. As always, set your own criteria and priorities, do your own research, and familiarize yourself with your personal selection process for your My Data, information, etc.

Here are just 10 of my criteria and factors I use to evaluate any gun, so I'll use them for the Ruger-57. In addition to my criteria, there are other subjective features that may be attractive to some, such as certain style, magazine release location, action, caliber, appearance, number of magazines carried, type of sights/mods, bore, rail, angled grip, no port or port , comes with extras like suitcase and bag, customer service, etc. So I combined them in my last miscellaneous criterium. I have to admit that ALL weapon selection decisions involve trade-offs, but I really want ALL of my criteria to be met. I set a possible total score of 10 points for each of my 10 criteria to get 100 points. You can certainly add your own additional criteria and preferences or subtract mine.

I wanted to shoot this pistol and purchased Federal American Eagle 40 grain 5.7x28mm ammo, AE5728A. Ammunition was on hand and you could buy ammunition at the best price. 5.7 ammo is offered by FN Herstal, Federal and Speer. I went through this offer very quickly and had to take more pictures to test it and rate it properly. I appreciate Ruger donating more ammo. This gun was a lot of fun to shoot and I was amazed by its accuracy, lack of sharp rise and very smooth recoil for such a light gun. I enjoyed shooting about 400 rounds and couldn't put this fine gun down. I usually shoot 500 rounds over a couple of days to decide if I want to use the gun and how best to use it. Below are my ratings for each of the 10 Ruger-57 criteria for my home defense and range. I have also wondered if this lightweight pistol with its 4.9" barrel and 5.6" height could be a carry gun. For me, it wasn't too heavy, too big, or too cumbersome for concealed carry. I know some will take it. I wanted to test and thoroughly inspect the gun for errors, stoppages, accuracy and reliability. Thanks to Ruger for providing me with some Federal American Eagle and FNH ammo to test and evaluate the pistol.

This Ruger-57 pistol has performed very well. No malfunctions or downtime and I loved the 20 round magazine. It digested different types of ammo without problems. To be honest, I was amazed by the very low feel of the recoil and almost no muzzle rise. I can honestly say that the recoil was much less than my 9mm and about the same as my .22 mag cartridges. It was easy and smooth as butter to handle when hanging the slide, and so easy to load and release the magazine well. And the magazines fell out of the magazine well, quickly and easily. It worked exceptionally well. I was impressed with its short, smooth, light and crisp trigger pull, just like my single-action pistols, even though it was a pre-cocked double action. I love the ergonomics and lines of this gun. Although polymer, it just felt solid in my hands, even though it was very light. It was very comfortable in my hand and the moderately aggressive grip texture was just right for me. The grip is thin enough, but longer and slightly wider to accommodate a 20-round magazine. The grip felt perfect and comfortable for my average sized hands. Again, I want to emphasize the smooth and very low recoil when this gun has a muzzle rise. Great features and performance to improve accuracy. Next, I explain and present my ideas for each of my criteria after the range test.

At various distances, especially 10-25 meters, accuracy was perfectly acceptable, but see for yourself, make your own decisions based on your skill and competence...and budget.

The Light And Lethal Ruger 57

The accuracy of the Ruger-57 was excellent for me from 5 to 25 yards. This old coder was happy, but the gun did most of the work. I didn't have to adjust the rear sights for elevation or windage out of the box. Other than not adjusting it, my hits were very good. 4.75#
