Fort Rucker Helicopter Training - The US military resumed basic flight training at Fort Rucker, Alabama, on April 20, after a two-week curfew imposed when few people at the base tested positive for the new coronavirus.

As of April 20, initial rotary wing training — sometimes referred to as the "Joint Core" flight school — is back in action, said Gen. David Francis, commander of the U.S. Army Center of Excellence and Fort Rucker.

About 800 student pilots have been removed, while procedures have been put in place that include fumigating planes between flights, distance learning and social distancing.

"This break is over and we are back to full flight training starting this Monday," Francis said. "Covid has affected all of us. What we have done here at the institution is that we have established control measures that allow us to continue working in this environment. We believe that Covid will be an ongoing problem for us in the foreseeable future."

In recent weeks, the base has redesigned some of its curriculum to include distance learning and the virtual classroom, social distancing, mask wearing and improved hygiene initiatives, Francis said. A quarantine facility was set up in the old barracks building to test incoming soldiers for the virus.

"Because of our ongoing requirement to produce airmen for our military readiness, we've had to work very hard to make sure we can continue to conduct training in a way that protects our people, our citizens, that protects our contractors and our contractors' families," he said.

At the top of the list of anti-Covid measures was the establishment of broker testing capabilities, which is now in place. Base officials can provide test results in about an hour. Whenever possible, training is now done virtually to prevent soldiers from congregating in classrooms, Francis said.

Major mission briefings have been cut and instructor pilots are going straight to training planes with students, Francis said. Both the trainee pilots and the instructors fly with face masks when in the cockpit.

"I can't change the size of the cockpit, so that's where we reduce the risk," Francis said. "We have sterilization procedures for our decks and for every crew change and for every maintenance person who goes through this process."
