Patriot has managed to make a value-focused high-capacity SATA SSD without going into QLC. The P200 lacks DRAM and is aggressively priced, but it's still the smallest 2TB drive available today.

High-capacity, low-cost SSDs are the Bigfoot of the SSD market. Occasionally, someone claims to see one, but upon closer inspection, something else is at work.
The Patriot P200 series is not only a massive 2TB capacity model, but it is certainly the most interesting. The 2TB drive is the only one in the series to use the new Maxio MAS0902A controller. The 1TB, 512GB, and 256GB capacities of the P200 series come with the Silicon Motion, Inc. SM2258XT, a controller we've tested in a number of SSDs in the past.
The highest capacity sells for just $189.99 and this is right in the middle of the abundant NAND; This is a very good price for a solid state drive. Most of the SSDs we see at this price point use 4-bit per cell flash (QLC) memory technology and not 3-bit per cell (TLC).

The P200 has one design flaw that fans won't appreciate, but it's also what helps the Patriot get such a low price. The series omits the DRAM memory used for the flash translation layer (FTL) map cache.

This is where the comparison with Big Foot comes in. Windows needs to know where all the data is on your storage devices. For decades, that meant hard disk drives (HDDs). Data is sent to disk, Windows knows where it is going for obvious reasons, it should read data when asked, delete files when you tell the OS and so on. SSDs and some modern HDDs also don't follow the Windows map. These devices have mixed data around them for performance, endurance and other reasons. The Flash translation layer is a decoder map between where Windows thinks the data is and where the disk actually has the data.
DRAM is faster than DDR2, DDR3 or DDR4 flash, but also more expensive. Modern SSDs use the simple formula of 1 megabyte of DRAM for every 1 gigabit of flash. There are some exceptions but this is the standard. DRAM allows the controller to access the card faster and the larger the amount of DRAM the more data fits in the access area faster. Imagine looking at a map of the United States and seeing the entire country at a glance. Someone called a state, say Iowa. I hope you can quickly show Iowa with the full field of vision map.
Non-DRAM SSDs do not use large amounts of DRAM for cache mapping. These controllers have a small high-speed cache on the controller usually consisting of SRAM. The rest of the map is in slower flash. Now imagine a person called a state. In this case, we will only be able to see parts of Iowa and surrounding states. The state you need to find is Maine and even if you know where Maine is on the map, you have to move your field of view to find the state and that takes more time than if you could see the whole map at once.
Extra time, in computing, is latency. Latency, or the time it takes to access data, is what makes solid state drives faster than hard drives. SSDs without DRAM are still faster than HDDs, but not as fast as drives with a DRAM buffer. The reason we rarely see SSDs without 2TB DRAM is that the more data the drive holds, the larger the FTL card.

The Patriot P200 is the first 2TB without DRAM we've tested. It will be interesting to see how the drive fares with other 2TB SATA SSDs we've tested over the years.
As we mentioned in the introduction, the Patriot P200 comes in four capacities ranging from 256GB to 2TB. The three smallest capacity Silicon Motion, Inc. The proven SM2258XT controller is used. We've tested this controller with Micron 64L TLC memory in the past and found the combination to work well for power users on a responsible budget.
The 2TB model we're testing today is different from other sizes. This unit uses the Maxio MAS0902A controller. This is the first time we've tested this controller and we're excited to see how it does with Micron's 64L TLC.

Performance ratings remain consistent across the entire product line with sequential read speeds of 530 MB/s and write speeds of 460 MB/s. Random performance up to 90,000 IOPS read and 80,000 IOPS write.
Patriot P400 Ssd Review: All You Need, And Then Some
Patriot backs the P200 series with a solid 3-year warranty that is limited by the amount of data you can write to the drive. The 256GB drive covers 160 terabytes writable (TBW). That doubles to 320 for the 512GB drive and doubles again to 640 TBW for the 1TB drive. The 2TB model hits a 1,000 TBW wall, so it no longer doubles like the other sizes.
Prices are fair for modern SSDs. The P200 series starts at just $34.99 for 256GB. That moves to $54.99 for 512GB and just $94.99 for 1TB. The 2TB drive retails for just $189.99 at the time of writing, with all prices from Amazon in the US.
The Patriot P200 2TB requires a heavier workload to reach peak performance. It is common for flash-based drives to require more work to achieve maximum performance, but the P200 required more than the others to exceed 500MB/s. Another way to say this is that the P200 is slower than most other SSDs
