This box is a new design for Ruger. No one will confuse what the company has done with this weapon, that's for sure. I like it, it's different.
So when I opened the box, I was prepared to be blown away. After all, if the gun was as awesome as the box it came in, we'd be in for a big surprise. I was not disappointed. I finally managed to open this blaster and find a modern equivalent of Buck Roger's U-235 atomic ray gun.

The Ruger doesn't look like this, but I'm sure it will be at least as strong. After all, 5.7 × 28 is an atomic cycle, according to some.
This weapon, introduced in 1998 and available to civilians since 2004, is used in at least 40 countries, including the United States, by various US law enforcement agencies (including the Secret Service). the pistol and your P90 Personal Defense Weapon (PDW).
NATO requested the development of a cartridge to possibly replace the 9mm, and the 5.7×28 was the FN's response. It was so good that FN put the PDW and pistol into production. The ammo is the same length as the .22 Magnum, but puts the V-Max bullet much faster and far exceeds the .22 Magnum in ballistic capabilities.
Other manufacturers build guns for this cartridge, but only FN and Ruger make pistols for the civilian market (as far as I know). The round caused a bit of a gnashing of teeth among some gun control groups when they discovered that the smaller .22 was capable of breaking through some types of Kevlar armor. This is achieved by military ammo calibers, but civilians are limited to sporting ammo types that are not as powerful.

There are military/police payloads (for example, the SS190 which is capable of penetrating a Kevlar Class IIIA vest), but our interest is in the civilian version. Federal provides civilian ammunition for the 5.7, as do several other companies, including the one that started it all, FN.
The 5.7×28 fires a .224 caliber bullet - in standard sport fashion this is usually a 40 grain Hornady V-Max bullet at around 1800 to 1900 fps. Some lighter lead loads are a bit more powerful.
Ammo isn't plentiful, at least where I live - I had to drive quite a bit to get the case for our tests, and it wasn't cheap. (I tend to forget that most of the ammo I shoot for pleasure comes from the reload seat, so I don't know much about the value of store-bought ammo. I buy ammo for most tests anyway). The ammo I used is marked F&N, the name of the brand, and uses a 40-grain V-Max bullet. But you get a lot for your money.
I agree that the 5.7×28 fills a pretty narrow niche as far as pistol calibers go, but it does have its advantages. Let's agree that military and law enforcement agencies and units will have their uses at this level, but what about the rest? I could see this weapon fulfilling a home defense role, as a single use.

I don't just mean two-legged worms. Where we live, we have all kinds of animals around. Just four days ago, I took pictures 103 meters from the front yard. Since we have dogs, cats, pigs and chickens, I tend to pay close attention to these criticisms.
He wasn't too bothered by my proximity, not as close as I was to him. He was kind enough to take some pictures. (It was when I took these photos that I saw a second shy dog in a photo that I hadn't seen before). These worms are just one example of a good reason to own a Ruger 57.
5.7 would make short work of its size, especially at this range. What if you live in a crowded place and don't complain about too many animals? Well, there are the aforementioned two-legged worms - this weapon would draw their attention. If you have to, for whatever reason, you can effectively shoot through the car door or windshield.
What about self-defense? You can carry this concealed weapon. However, I think this was not foreseen when it was designed. It's an effective cycle, though - the military's interest in it bears this out. With its ability to penetrate body armor and similar objects, this little guy makes an amazing cartridge. One thing that people sometimes don't think about is the frequency of vaccinations. This rifle's recoil is very manageable and allows for quick follow-up shots. With two or more 20 mags on you, you'd be knocked out.

Another purpose I could see using this gun is target shooting competition. I'm not sure I want to use it for steel (I didn't like the little holes or dimples bullets dig into their targets), but for target shooting it might be interesting. With its extended aim and power, this gun would be fun to shoot metal targets from 100 yards or more.
Then there's always the fun of walking up to your business in line, having a few rounds, waiting for the dust to stop falling from the blast ceiling, and then watching the group-style shooting inquiry. When the amount is secure, pass it on. Let's face it: we all know people who buy guns for that very purpose in the first place. This gun is decent for sure, but I don't think that's the main reason to buy one.
Not sure if you noticed I left out one of my patterns use revolvers I didn't mention 57 - hunting. I'm a big fan of handgun hunting and have caught plenty of deer over the years, not to mention some criticism. But I don't think I would recommend the Hunt 57 unless you are in one of two situations:

Not much different here. What you can't see is the hidden hammer - this is not an assault rifle.
Note that the discharge lever has rotated. This is a great way to separate the slide from the board. It is secured, unlike the loose pins on LC9s/EC9s and 9 Pistols, among others. Also, look out for the ubiquitous hammer safety lever. And if you look down at the board, you'll see that.
Notice how tight they are in the frame and how tall they are. This is something new for Ruger and I love it.
Take a look at the writing style Ruger launched with the LCP II. It's nice that they've kept this style across a variety of models, as it helps to instantly recognize the branding and grip they have in common with Ruger guns. The texture is enough to place the grip securely in your hand. Also, notice that the trigger guard is lowered to allow your hand to buy the top, closer to the axis of the bore.

As we can see from the photos above, Ruger has built a very nice pistol here. As is usual with this company, this pistol shows no signs of an odd finish or telltale signs, perhaps a very well-finished surface or rounded corners on the gun that shouldn't be.
Ruger has always (well, since I bought my first one in 1978 at least) had excellent adjustable rear sights, and this one is no exception. The adjustment knob is secure and the back surface of the blade has some lines designed to break glare or glare.
